What We Check Against Our Machines

Tool size & weight	Checked against our platen area, tie-bar spacing, daylight and lifting capacity.
Clamp force & shot weight	Matched to the part, material and cavity count so the tool runs inside a sensible process window.
Shut height	Confirmed before the tool is booked in, along with any spacer or adaptation needed.
Ejection	Knock-out pattern, stroke and any hydraulic or pneumatic core requirement.
Cooling	Circuit count, connector type and flow requirement.
Hot runner & controls	Zone count, connector type and controller compatibility.
Material	Grade, colour and drying requirement, plus any masterbatch or regrind arrangement.

Where a final run or buffer stock is not possible, we say so early and plan around it, rather than discovering the gap halfway through.

Tool Inspection & Condition Assessment

Once the tool reaches our Haverhill toolroom it is stripped down, cleaned and inspected properly. Tools that have been in production for years rarely arrive in the condition their paperwork suggests, so we look rather than assume.

Tool Repair & Adaptation

Not every transferred tool arrives production-ready, and that is normal. Because we design, build and maintain mould tools in our own toolroom, the work is done here rather than sub-contracted out. Depending on what the inspection finds, that can include:

Bringing Injection Moulding Production Back to the UK?

If your tooling currently sits overseas, moving production does not automatically mean paying for a new mould tool. Existing tooling is often suitable for transfer, subject to condition, machine compatibility and a technical assessment.

Reshoring is not automatically cheaper per part, and we will not pretend otherwise. What it does change is everything around the part price:

Plenty of the companies we speak to are trying to get out of a difficult supplier relationship and do not hold the tool drawings, the process sheet or sometimes even a current drawing of the part. That is normal, and it is not a reason to wait. Send what you have and our engineering team will tell you what else is needed.

Can an existing injection mould tool be transferred to Form Moulders?

In most cases yes. We take on existing production tooling regularly. We review the tool against our moulding machines, inspect its condition once it arrives, carry out any repairs or adaptation needed, then trial and sample it before production starts. The first step is a tool transfer assessment.

Can you transfer tooling from another UK injection moulder?

Yes. UK to UK transfers are the most straightforward, because transport is quick and the tool can usually be inspected within days of leaving your current supplier. We will still plan the changeover around your production schedule so you do not run short of parts.

Can you transfer injection mould tools from China or overseas?

Yes. We regularly speak to companies bringing tooling back from Asia and Europe. Overseas transfers need more planning around shipping, insurance, customs paperwork and buffer stock, and the tool is more likely to need refurbishment on arrival, so we build that into the plan up front. Will my existing tool work in your moulding machines?

That is one of the first things we check. We look at tool dimensions and weight, shut height, clamp and shot requirements, ejection, cooling connections, and any hot runner or control equipment, then confirm machine compatibility or tell you what adaptation would be needed.

What happens if my mould tool needs repair?

We have an in-house toolroom, so repairs and refurbishment are handled on site rather than sub-contracted. After inspection we set out what needs doing, what is optional, and what it will cost, before any work starts. See mould toolmaking.

Can you work without the original tool drawings?

Yes. Missing drawings are common on older tooling, especially where a supplier has changed hands. We work from the tool itself and from an approved sample part, and can reverse-engineer geometry where it is needed. See custom moulding.

How long does an injection mould tool transfer take?

It depends on where the tool is, its condition and how much validation you need. A straightforward UK transfer of a healthy tool can move quickly, while an overseas tool needing refurbishment and full re-qualification takes longer. We give you a realistic timeline after the initial review rather than a number that later slips.

Can production continue while the tool is being transferred?

That is what the transfer plan is for. We agree a final run with your current supplier, or a buffer stock level, so you keep receiving parts across the gap between the last shot at your old supplier and approved parts from us.

Can you reproduce my existing component?

The aim of a transfer is parts that match what your customers already approve. We work to your drawing, your specification and an approved sample, then inspect first-off parts against those before you sign production off.

What information do you need to assess my tooling?

Send whatever you have. A component drawing or STEP file, tool drawings, photographs of the tool, its rough size and weight, the material and colour, your annual volumes and any known problems all help. If you only have a few of those, we can still start. Our tool transfer checklist lists everything worth gathering.

Can you transfer several mould tools at once?

Yes. Multi-tool transfers are usually phased so the highest-risk or highest-volume parts move first and the rest follow once the process is proven. We will agree the sequence with you rather than moving everything in one go.

Can Form Moulders manufacture the components after transfer?

Yes, and that is the point of the exercise. A transfer ends with ongoing UK production, whether that is injection moulding, technical moulding or micro moulding, with the tool maintained in our toolroom.
